About Me

Still driving night trunk for my sins. :|

With the help of Tom Riding i have been fortunate enough to amount a great deal of material resulting in the development of this web site documenting the detailed history of W & J Riding.

The site now contains over 1,300  images with plenty more still to add but we are always on the lookout for any new material.

Should you have any pictures of the long gone Riding fleet, the older the better, please get in touch.

About Me

age 63yrs, born Chopwell, Newcastle upon Tyne, I spent as much of childhood life as possible in the cab of various makes and sizes of trucks that my Dad drove and I loved every minute of it! (My Dad was the best driver in the world of course)

I served an apprenticeship as a Motor Fitter at the Consett Iron Company garage from 1968-1972 and also loved it, a great bunch of knowledgeable and proffesional people and a large and varied fleet of dififferent and exotic equipment. (Gordon Glendinning could be a bit of a pain at times) C.I.C put me through my driving test with BSC in a Mark2 Cortina, sat my test in Gateshead.

The location of the garage also enabled me to view all the visiting trucks coming and going via the nearby weighbridge, Siddle Cook, Redmires. Salkeld. Cawthorn Sinclair etc etc,I wish I had had a decent camera and the foresight to record these vehicles to look back on, I dare not think of the sights and sounds a video camera would have recorded, quite a few Foden and Commer two strokes negotiating a hairpin bend as quick as they could pushing the tyres to the limit, I can hear them now, down the gears and up again!

I emigrated to Oz in 1973 and started working on Kenworths and Macks but would get my fair share of Bedfords and AEC's to work on because I was a Pom.

I aquired my semi license some years later in Australia  via another driving test, you need further licences or upgrades to drive b-doubles and road trains etc.

I moved on to heavy engineering and construction to get away from the workshop senario - the weather was to good to be stuck indoors underneath trucks.

I still kept in touch with the truck and bus scene in Australia and at home and my interest especially in the older marques of vehicles and transport companies continues to this day.

The Guy Invincible shown in the photo ended up on its side going over the moors in the early hours one morning loaded with hydrated lime from ICI Fleetwood to FR Brickworks at Chester-le-Street. I am not sure but I think the chassis was too badly twisted to be salvaged, it has also covered a lot of miles at that stage.

About Me

I live in Belleville Ontario Canada. I was born in Manchester in 1947 and can remember my father telling me about an uncle who worked for a trucking company called Ridings. He also mentioned the company was nationalized. I had assumed that since our family had roots in Yorkshire that Ridings was as in East Riding West Riding. I believe this uncle would have the surname Morpeth and the Christian name William. My father was christened Kenneth Morpeth Hodgson. I would be interested in discovering if I have found the correct company. I should also mention I apprenticed at English Electrict on Strand Rd. Preston.(Hope it's still in Lancashire.

My family ran a haulage comany in central Scotland . I served a 5 year appreticeship with the ERF dealer in Edinburgh . The haulage business closed in the early 1980 s after over 100 years due mainly to the then recession . I moved on to various management jobs and since my early 50 s returned to hgv driving .
